Nobody likes to think about a parent getting sick or becoming disabled. When our parents are well, we tend to assume that they’ll stay that way forever. It’s easier, and a lot more pleasant, to cross our fingers and wish for continued good fortune than to take a hard, realistic look at some rather grim possibilities for the future.
Nobody benefits, though, if you bury your head in the sand and refuse to consider what may lie ahead as far as your parents are concerned. Doing so leaves you woefully unprepared to deal with caring for your parents, and it denies them the opportunity to tell you what they expect and desire for the future.
If your parents are very elderly, or your dad’s just been diagnosed with cancer or your mom’s had a heart attack, the urgency to organize and plan can incre – tremendously. When everything’s going along smoothly, however, we tend put off talking about difficult subjects or dealing with what seem like unpleasant tasks.
